The trades, on the charts

Two long SP500 positions, opened 21 minutes apart two hours after the US open and closed separately. One chart. The green triangle is an entry, the green dot the exit (closed up), the shaded band the time the position was held, and the numbers match the list under the chart.

The loss, first

The loss, first: none on 5 October; the smallest result was SP500 position 2, +10.9 points after 2 h 18 min

None on 5 October: two positions, two closed up. With no loser to show, the smallest result goes first: SP500 position 2, bought at 7,767.0 at 18:52 and closed at 7,777.9 at 21:10 — +10.9 points after 2 h 18 min. Position 1, bought 21 minutes earlier and 3.7 points lower, closed +13.8 points after 1 h 19 min.

What the record shows: position 2 was bought a few points higher than position 1, and on the chart the index stayed just below that entry for about half an hour after the purchase, until about 19:20, and touched position 1's entry level, before it moved higher. The index kept rising after both exits — its high of the evening came around 22:15 — so the record shows what was taken, not the most that was available.

What happened, in order

  • 16:30 — US open. On the chart the S&P 500 futures rose through the first two hours of the session.
  • 17:23 — a basket opened on 2 October was closed (see that report).
  • 18:31 — bought SP500 at 7,763.3 (position 1).
  • 18:52 — bought SP500 at 7,767.0 (position 2), 3.7 points higher.
  • 18:52–19:20 — the index traded just below position 2's entry, briefly touching position 1's, then climbed.
  • 19:51 — position 1 closed at 7,777.1: +13.8 points after 1 h 19 min.
  • 21:10 — position 2 closed at 7,777.9: +10.9 points after 2 h 18 min.

Both positions were 2.0 lots.

Market context

On Monday 5 October the Nasdaq Composite closed at a record 27,477.31 (+1.1 %), led by Nvidia, which also closed at a record. The S&P 500 rose 0.7 % to 7,773.95, close to its all-time high, and the Dow gained 0.2 % to 51,267.90; the Russell 2000 added 0.5 %. A couple of buyout announcements also helped stocks. Brent crude settled a little over $100 a barrel, and the 10-year Treasury yield rose to about 5.31 %. Sources at the end.

Costs of the day

Commission on both positions; no overnight financing and no dividend adjustments. Costs took 0.7 % of the day's gross trading result. They are part of the record, so they are part of every report.

What XFX investors saw

DARWIN XFX replicates this account's positions through Darwinex's risk engine, which targets a monthly value-at-risk of 6.5 % (95 %) and scales position sizes accordingly. An investor's result for 5 October is therefore the change in the DARWIN's quote, published on the XFX page at Darwinex, not the figures above. That is also why these reports are written in points, not currency: points describe the trading; the DARWIN's quote describes the investment.

About the charts

Entry and exit prices and times are the account's real fills. The market line is a public reference series at 5-minute closes, via Yahoo Finance: the S&P 500 E-mini futures (shifted down by 48.6 points). The shift is the average gap between the reference series and the account's CFD price at the fills, so that the line sits on the same price scale as the fills. The chart shows 16:30–23:30. The shape of the day is the market's; the levels of the fills are the account's.
