Trade report, 7 October 2026: short in the morning, long after the open

Short SP500 and NDX in the morning, two quick long baskets after the US open: seven positions, all closed up — NDX +106.6 points over three, SP500 +30.3 over four. The smallest result goes first: SP500 +4.5 points in eight minutes.

Platform time UTC+3. Every entry, exit and result comes from the trading account's closed-position history. Returns for XFX investors are produced by Darwinex's risk engine and differ from these numbers — see the last section.

The trades, on the charts

Seven positions, all in SP500 and NDX, three of them short. In the morning the account was short: an SP500 + NDX basket at 09:11 and a single SP500 short at 12:17 — sold first, bought back to close, so they gain when the price falls. After the US open it went long with two quick baskets, at 17:12 and 17:50, each closed within ten minutes. One chart per instrument. A red downward triangle is a short entry (sold), a green upward triangle a long entry (bought); the dot is the exit (green: closed up), the shaded band the time the position was held, and the numbers match the list under each chart.

NDX on 7 October 2026: position 1 sold short at 31,249.2 at 09:11 and bought back at 31,187.7 at 10:54 (+61.5 points); position 2 bought at 30,998.4 at 17:12 and closed at 31,022.5 at 17:20 (+24.1 points); position 3 bought at 31,014.7 at 17:50 and closed at 31,035.7 at 17:59 (+21.0 points)

For a short the entry is the sale and the exit the buy-back, so the result is entry minus exit: SP500 1 was sold at 7,828.1 and bought back at 7,822.3, +5.8 points.

The loss, first

The loss, first: none on 7 October; the smallest result was SP500 +4.5 points in eight minutes

None on 7 October: seven positions, seven closed up. With no loser to show, the smallest result goes first: the SP500 leg of basket 2, bought at 7,776.6 at 17:12 and closed at 7,781.1 at 17:20 — +4.5 points in 8 minutes. Its NDX twin in the same basket closed +24.1 points.

What the record shows: a day without a loss is not a day without risk. The short basket was opened at 09:11 and both legs spent the next hour close to their entries — on the charts NDX went back above its sale price around 10:00 — before the market slipped and the basket was bought back at 10:54. The record shows where each position went, not only where it ended.

What happened, in order

  • 09:11 — basket 1, short: sold SP500 at 7,828.1 and NDX at 31,249.2, seven seconds apart. Both indices drifted lower through the European morning.
  • 10:54 — basket 1 bought back: NDX at 31,187.7 (+61.5 points), SP500 at 7,822.3 (+5.8 points), after 1 h 42–43 min. On the charts both indices bounced in the half hour after the exit.
  • 12:17 — sold SP500 short at 7,822.1, on its own, without an NDX leg.
  • 13:57 — bought it back at 7,808.3 (+13.8 points) after 1 h 40 min. Both indices kept falling into the afternoon.
  • 16:30 — US open. Both index futures dropped sharply; on the charts NDX made its low of the day around 16:45, SP500 around 17:45.
  • 17:12 — basket 2, long: bought SP500 at 7,776.6 and NDX at 30,998.4; closed at 17:20 — SP500 at 7,781.1 (+4.5 points), NDX at 31,022.5 (+24.1 points), after about 8 minutes.
  • 17:50 — basket 3, long: bought NDX at 31,014.7 and SP500 at 7,771.9; closed at 17:59 — NDX at 31,035.7 (+21.0 points), SP500 at 7,778.1 (+6.2 points), after about 9 minutes. The SP500 entry came within minutes of SP500's low of the day on the chart.

The baskets paired SP500 and NDX at 1.0 : 0.5 lots (basket 1, short), 2.0 : 0.7 (basket 2) and 1.5 : 0.5 (basket 3); the single SP500 short was 1.0 lot. For the day SP500 made +30.3 points over four positions and NDX +106.6 points over three.

Market context

On Wednesday 7 October US stocks ended a five-day winning streak and pulled back from record highs as Treasury yields rose again: the 10-year yield touched 5.36 % during the day, its highest since 2002, and ended near 5.28 %. The S&P 500 closed at 7,801.77 (−0.22 %), the Nasdaq Composite at 27,538.69 (−0.22 %) and the Dow at 51,179.87 (−0.66 %); rate-sensitive sectors such as banks and housing were among the weakest. Oil reversed early gains — Brent had traded above $102 in the morning — and settled at $100.20 a barrel (WTI $88.28). Investors were also waiting for the minutes of the Federal Reserve's September meeting. Sources at the end.

Costs of the day

Commission on all seven positions; no overnight financing and no dividend adjustments. Costs took 1.4 % of the day's gross trading result. They are part of the record, so they are part of every report.

What XFX investors saw

DARWIN XFX replicates this account's positions through Darwinex's risk engine, which targets a monthly value-at-risk of 6.5 % (95 %) and scales position sizes accordingly. An investor's result for 7 October is therefore the change in the DARWIN's quote, published on the XFX page at Darwinex, not the figures above. That is also why these reports are written in points, not currency: points describe the trading; the DARWIN's quote describes the investment.

About the charts

Entry and exit prices and times are the account's real fills. The market lines are public reference series at 5-minute closes, via Yahoo Finance: the Nasdaq-100 E-mini futures (shifted down by 222.0 points) and the S&P 500 E-mini futures (shifted down by 46.1 points). Each shift is the average gap between the reference series and the account's CFD price at that instrument's fills, so that the line sits on the same price scale as the fills. The charts show 08:30–18:30; the two long baskets after the US open lasted under ten minutes each, so their markers sit close together — the list under each chart gives every fill. The shape of the day is the market's; the levels of the fills are the account's.
