The trades, on the charts

Five long positions: one EURUSD position held into the night, and two index baskets, each one SP500 and one NDX position opened and closed together. One chart per instrument, the one with the loss first. The green triangle is an entry, the dot the exit (green closed up, red closed down), the shaded band the time the position was held, and the numbers match the list under each chart.

The loss, first

The loss, first: NDX −11.6 points in basket 1, with its paired SP500 leg +3.2 points

The day's only loser was the NDX leg of basket 1: bought at 30,002.3 at 20:23 and closed at 29,990.7 at 22:34 — −11.6 points after 2 h 11 min. Its SP500 twin, bought six seconds earlier at 7,717.0 and closed three seconds earlier at 7,720.2, finished +3.2 points. On both charts the indices fell soon after the entries and spent most of the next two hours below them; the basket was closed after the line came back close to the entry levels, NDX just short of its own.

What the record shows: basket 2 was opened while basket 1 was still running, about 100 NDX points and 10 SP500 points lower, and closed within a minute and a half. It is reported as its own basket, with its own result, not netted against basket 1. On a day the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.88 %, the loss is small, but it is still the first thing in this report.

What happened, in order

  • 15:30 — US CPI for September released. On the charts EURUSD fell by about 60 pips within ten minutes and both index futures fell sharply.
  • 16:30 — US open.

  • 20:23 — basket 1: bought SP500 at 7,717.0 and NDX at 30,002.3. Both indices moved below these entries within minutes.
  • 22:18 — basket 2: bought SP500 at 7,706.7 and NDX at 29,901.2, with basket 1 still open.
  • 22:19 — basket 2 closed: NDX at 29,946.6 (+45.4 points) after 1 min 16 s, SP500 at 7,711.7 (+5.0 points) after 1 min 30 s.

Market context

On Wednesday 14 October the September consumer price index came in hotter than expected in its core measure: core CPI rose 0.3 % on the month against 0.2 % expected (2.6 % on the year), while headline CPI rose 0.6 % on the month and 3.7 % on the year, with higher energy costs a main contributor. Expectations of a further Fed rate rise lifted Treasury yields and the dollar. The S&P 500 closed at 7,718.94 (−1.11 %), the Nasdaq Composite at 26,692.87 (−1.88 %), with technology the weakest sector, and the Dow at 51,621.48 (−0.09 %). WTI crude settled near $95.1 a barrel. Costs of the day

Commission on all five positions and overnight financing on the EURUSD position; no dividend adjustments. Costs took 3.2 % of the day's gross trading result; the night's financing on EURUSD was about four-fifths of the day's total commission. They are part of the record, so they are part of every report.

What XFX investors saw

DARWIN XFX replicates this account's positions through Darwinex's risk engine, which targets a monthly value-at-risk of 6.5 % (95 %) and scales position sizes accordingly. An investor's result for 14–15 October is therefore the change in the DARWIN's quote, published on the XFX page at Darwinex, not the figures above. That is also why these reports are written in points, not currency: points describe the trading; the DARWIN's quote describes the investment.

About the charts

Entry and exit prices and times are the account's real fills. The market lines are public reference series at 5-minute closes, via Yahoo Finance: the Nasdaq-100 E-mini futures (shifted down by 243.4 points), the S&P 500 E-mini futures (shifted down by 50.5 points) and EUR/USD spot (shifted down by 0.00032). Each shift is the average gap between the reference series and the account's CFD price at that instrument's fills, so that the line sits on the same price scale as the fills. The index charts show 19:00–23:30, the part of the evening around the two baskets; the EURUSD chart shows 15:00–02:30, from just before the CPI release to after the exit. The shape of the day is the market's; the levels of the fills are the account's.
