The loss, first

The loss, first: none on 21 October; the only result was SP500 +5.1 points in 15 minutes

None on 21 October: one position, closed up. With no loser to show, the only result goes first: SP500 bought at 7,714.9 at 17:13 and closed at 7,720.0 at 17:28 — +5.1 points in 15 minutes.

What the record shows: on the chart the index fell about 25 points in the first 40 minutes after the US open, and the position was bought close to that low. It was closed a quarter of an hour later. The index kept rising afterwards — on the reference line it was about 35 points above the exit by 18:45 — so the record shows what was taken, not the most that was available.

What happened, in order

  • 15:30–16:30 — before the US open, the S&P 500 futures moved sideways.

  • 17:28 — closed at 7,720.0: +5.1 points after 15 minutes.
  • 17:30–18:45 — the index rose steadily to its highs of the afternoon.

The position was 1.0 lot.

Market context

On Wednesday 21 October US stocks rose after strong earnings, including a much better profit report than expected from SpaceX, which lifted other AI-related stocks and Tesla. The S&P 500 closed at 7,757.17 (+0.6 %), close to the record it set earlier in October; the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.1 % to 26,702.86 and the Dow 0.7 % to 52,856.09. Technology led the gains, while healthcare, consumer staples and utilities lagged; Netflix fell on concerns about future growth. Stocks pulled back in the final hour as yields rose. Tesla and Meta reported after the close. Sources at the end.

Costs of the day

Commission only; no overnight financing and no dividend adjustments. Costs took 1.6 % of the day's gross trading result. They are part of the record, so they are part of every report.

What XFX investors saw

DARWIN XFX replicates this account's positions through Darwinex's risk engine, which targets a monthly value-at-risk of 6.5 % (95 %) and scales position sizes accordingly. An investor's result for 21 October is therefore the change in the DARWIN's quote, published on the XFX page at Darwinex, not the figures above. That is also why these reports are written in points, not currency: points describe the trading; the DARWIN's quote describes the investment.

About the chart

Entry and exit prices and times are the account's real fills. The market line is a public reference series at 5-minute closes, via Yahoo Finance: the S&P 500 E-mini futures (shifted down by 40.4 points). The shift is the average gap between the reference series and the account's CFD price at the fills, so that the line sits on the same price scale as the fills. The chart shows 15:30–19:30. The shape of the day is the market's; the levels of the fills are the account's.
