Money Is Fleeing Tech and Running Into the Dow: A DJX Call Butterfly

Tech is sliding on AI-spending worries and money is rotating into blue chips: the Dow 30 rose 1% to 52,496. How a call butterfly on DJX (expiry 30 October) targets a landing near 53,500 for a fixed cost of about $205, with max profit, max loss and breakevens worked out.

Educational example. It explains how a structure works; it is not a trade report and not a recommendation. Premiums are illustrative.

The rotation: out of tech, into the Dow

Technology stocks are sliding on worries about AI spending, and money is moving into blue chips. The Dow 30 rose 1 % to 52,496, back above 52,000, led by 3M (+5.8 %) and healthcare. Oil eased on hopes of a US–Iran deal.

When an index moves on rotation rather than on a broad rally, one question is how far the next leg can go, and an option structure can be built around a specific landing level.

The structure: a call butterfly

A call butterfly buys one call below the target, sells two calls at the target and buys one call above it. It costs a small, fixed amount and pays the most if the index finishes right at the middle strike.

Leg Option Role
Buy 1 DJX 525 call lower wing
Sell 2 DJX 535 calls the body: the target
Buy 1 DJX 545 call upper wing

Underlying: DJX, an option on the Dow Jones Industrial Average divided by 100 (DJX 535 = Dow 53,500). Expiry: Friday 30 October 2026.

The numbers, worked out

  • Cost (net debit): about $2.05 × 100 = ≈ $205. That is also the maximum loss.
  • Maximum profit: (wing width − debit) × 100 = (10 − 2.05) × 100 = ≈ $795, if DJX finishes at 535 (Dow near 53,500).
  • Maximum loss: ≈ $205, if DJX ends below 525 or above 545 (Dow below 52,500 or above 54,500).
  • Breakevens: 525 + 2.05 = 527.05 and 545 − 2.05 = 542.95 (Dow about 52,705 and 54,295).
  • Reward against risk: $795 ÷ $205 ≈ 3.9 : 1 in favour of the trade, if it lands.

What can move it

  • Tesla and Meta earnings (Wednesday 21 October, after the US close): a big surprise in tech can change the rotation story.
  • The Fed decision on 28 October.
  • Oil and Iran headlines.

The catch

A butterfly needs a precise landing. A move that is too small or too big both lose: the index has to end inside the 527.05–542.95 window on 30 October, and the full profit only comes near 535. A low cost does not mean high odds. Anyone studying this structure should size it small and decide in advance where they would close it.
