EUR/USD Stuck in a Box: An Iron Condor Example Before the Fed and ECB

EUR/USD has traded between about 1.1113 and 1.1285 since early October, and even a hot US CPI did not break the range. How an iron condor on CME Euro FX options (expiry 23 October) is built for a range, with its credit, maximum loss and breakevens worked out.

Educational example. It explains how a structure works; it is not a trade report and not a recommendation. Premiums are illustrative.

Where EUR/USD stands

Since the start of October, EUR/USD has traded in a box: the 2026 low near 1.1113 at the bottom and about 1.1285 at the top. On 14 October a hotter-than-expected US inflation report (CPI 3.7 % on the year) pushed the pair to the bottom of that box, and it came straight back inside the range.

Our last EUR/USD idea looked at selling the upside near 1.1300. The pair has not traded above 1.1285 since then.

The Fed (28 October) and the ECB (29 October) meet the week after next. Weeks ahead of big central-bank meetings are often quieter, but nothing guarantees it.

The structure: an iron condor

An iron condor is built for a range. It sells one option above the market and one below it, and buys further-out options on both sides so that the loss is capped.

Leg Option Role
Sell 1.1100 put collects premium below the range
Buy 1.1050 put caps the loss on the downside
Sell 1.1325 call collects premium above the range
Buy 1.1375 call caps the loss on the upside

Expiry: Friday 23 October 2026, CME Euro FX options (contract size 125,000 EUR, so 1 pip = $12.50).

The numbers, worked out

  • Credit received: about 13 pips × $12.50 = ≈ $162 per contract.
  • Maximum profit: the credit, ≈ $162, if EUR/USD expires between 1.1100 and 1.1325.
  • Width of each wing: 1.1100 − 1.1050 = 50 pips = $625.
  • Maximum loss: $625 − $162 = ≈ $463, if EUR/USD expires below 1.1050 or above 1.1375.
  • Breakevens: 1.1100 − 0.0013 = 1.1087 and 1.1325 + 0.0013 = 1.1338.
  • Risk against reward: $463 ÷ $162 ≈ 2.8 : 1. The structure wins often, small, and loses rarely, large.

What breaks the box

  • Eurozone flash PMIs next week.
  • Oil and Middle East headlines, which drove this month's inflation surprises.
  • Positioning ahead of the Fed and the ECB: traders may start moving before the meetings.

A single headline can push the pair out of a range that held for weeks. Anyone studying this structure should know in advance where they would close it, not only what it pays if nothing happens.

Summary

Credit ≈ 13 pips ($162)
Maximum loss ≈ $463
